The Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS), Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University invites applications for a junior faculty to assume the role of Assistant Director of the Developmental Mechanisms of Psychopathology Program, directed by Lauren Wakschlag, PhD. MSS is the academic home for more than 50 interdisciplinary faculty including health, community, measurement, developmental, social, neuroscientific and clinical psychologists, prevention scientists, medical sociologists and anthropologists, and physician-scientists (www.mss.northwestern.edu).
We are seeking an energetic and highly collaborative developmental scientist with scientific training and expertise in developmentally-sensitive measurement, early childhood disruptive behavior and/or pre-postnatal mechanisms of developmental psychopathology. The candidate should have scientific and management training/experience in longitudinal developmental research and program development. The Assistant Director will work closely with Dr. Wakschlag in leading and overseeing program activities and operations.
The MSS Developmental Mechanisms Program is a translational research program at the interface of developmental and clinical science, with central emphasis on emergent disruptive behavior pathways. Housing multiple NIH-funded studies, the program is nationally recognized for generating novel paradigms to measure early childhood disruptive behavior and elucidating prenatal and its neurodevelopmental mechanisms. We have created innovative observational and survey tools (e.g., DB-DOS and MAP-DB), uniquely designed to differentiate normative variation from emergent clinical problems in the first five years of life. The program’s mechanistic focus investigates how the early environment (including adverse prenatal exposures, stressful life events, parental psychopathology, and parenting) contributes to early neurodevelopmental abnormalities, using cutting-edge developmentally-sensitive methods in neuroimaging, cognitive neuroscience, and behavioral assessment. Early career scientist, Amelie Petitclerc, PhD, leads initiatives designed to expand the reach of the Developmental Mechanisms Program to policy-relevant early life prevention Current studies include a newly funded randomized trial to test the impact of prenatal stress reduction on neurodevelopment; a multi-method, multi-assessment longitudinal study of irritability in toddlers; an ongoing longitudinal study of mental health in an ethnically diverse pediatric sample oversampled for disruptive behavior and family violence. The program emphasizes team science, and engages a broad spectrum of collaborators from diverse disciplines (e.g., neuroscience, communication science, pediatrics, epidemiology and prevention science), with more than a dozen affiliated faculty from across Northwestern, as well as ongoing national and international collaborations. The candidate will play a key role in advancing supplementary studies and their linkage to ongoing work of the program to MSS-based national developmental initiatives, such as the ECHO PRO Measurement Core.
The Assistant Director will have primary oversight responsibilities for three program areas: (1) Study Operations i.e., overseeing multiple funded study teams, and budgetary and regulatory oversight; (2) Team Science Activities, including collaborating on and orchestrating manuscripts and grant preparation, and facilitating supplementary studies with a broad interdisciplinary collaborative net. The candidate will also participate in program educational activities (e.g., mentoring graduate students and postdocs); and (3) Program Procedures, Workflow & Dissemination, including developing system-wide procedures that improve efficiency and integration across studies and facilitate public access, enhance program visibility and dissemination of its measurement tools.
The Assistant Director will have rich opportunities to participate in scientific activities of the program including manuscript and grant development and submission. The Developmental Mechanisms Program is also a hub for the Northwestern Institute for Innovations in Developmental Sciences (DevSci), directed by Dr. Wakschlag, which is catalyst and platform for interdisciplinary scientific exchange and training in the Developmental Sciences across the University. It is anticipated that the candidate will be an active member of this broader developmental science community.
The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in developmental psychology or psychopathology, or a related field, and training/experience in interdisciplinary team science, research program development and management. Expertise in multi-modal early childhood assessment, developmental science, and early influences on mental health is optimal, and competence in statistical techniques for developmental science, and experience with NIH grant writing are also strong pluses. A record of scholarly publication and a history of engagement in the conduct of developmental science research are desirable. S/he will have strong organizational, problem-solving, writing and communication skills, and capability to address day-to-day tasks, take initiative and effectively balance competing priorities independently. We seek a candidate who brings a strong skillset in program management including building staff relationships that are both positive and accountable, and generating timelines for deliverables and their metrics for success. Candidates who have an entrepreneurial spirit, can think on their feet, work flexibly and nimbly, are creative and energetic, and revel in collaboration will be an excellent fit.
Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and credentials. This is a full time continuing position. Start date asap. Please send a statement of interest, curriculum vitae, representative reprints and three references to Laurie Wakschlag (ude.nretsewhtron|weirual#ude.nretsewhtron|weirual).
Northwestern University is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer of all protected classes, including veterans and individuals with disabilities. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Hiring is contingent upon eligibility to work in the United States.
