						 <p>I've heard of it taking as short as a day like you mentioned but I've also heard of it taking months. So I think there is a huge amount of variance. In my department we are eager to move very quickly (including some pre-negotiating with the dean before the candidate is even offered the job), so a candidate can't really drag it out more than a week. But I've known other candidates at other places managing to have it go on for months.</p>

						 <p>How long is average?</p> <p>The first time I was on the market I had an aggressive who offered me the moon and they were finished within a few hours of sending my start-up request.</p> <p>I sent my start-up request to the Chair a week ago. He forwarded to Dean, and crickets. Chair indicated that the request was reasonable and we communicated over weekend. Last communique was the Chair saying he would prod the Dean.</p> <p>I'm OK with it dragging out (I have another offer in negotiation), but at this rate we'll be going forever. Still need to negotiate salary, teaching, space, time to tenure, etc.</p>
