I had the reimbursement deal too but wrote to them and told them I was broke and they said oh, well if you go through one of the moving companies we work with (they had three) then they can just bill us directly. It's worth asking the dept. business manager if this is possible. Also, I just found out some of the relocation funds can be used for hiree and spouse to come out and find a place to live, so you might want to ask about that too.

I don't really have advice, but just wanted to say - how awesome that you got $$ for moving! I did get a t-t job, but the move is on my dime.

I'd suggest trying the whole pod moving thing (google is your friend :) ) It's the "new" thing in moving. the company drops of a container in your parking lot, you fill up the container with your stuff, they then move container to your new place and you unpack. For long distance moves, it should be cheaper than the traditional method, and you have fewer people touching your stuff ;)

Sadly with reimbursement based moving coverage (most unis are like this) you can't just donate your existing stuff and buy new stuff at ikea. ;)

So, I'm very fortunate to have landed a tenure-track position. However, I am moving clear across the nation (from CA to NY) this summer and have been given $5,000 toward moving expenses (and this is on a reimbursement basis). I wish it were a check up front to make it happen, but what can you do…

Has anyone made a long-distance move like this? If so, any tips on holding down costs?
