I am currently tenured at a smaller (but research intensive university — our teaching load is 2-2). Last year, I applied for a couple of jobs at R01 schools (mostly because I want to get back West nearer to family) and had a handful of interviews but got no job offer. I had an interview for an endowed chair position, but did not get offered the position. They told me that they preferred to give it to a "full professor". Clearly, this person turned them down (or the other candidate was not full either), because the position is re-advertised this year. This year the endowed position is advertised, but so is another position (of open rank) (and it is not endowed). I liked the department and loved the job. I had a bad chest cold when I interviewed last year, so I definitely did not perform my best. I would like to apply for the "non-endowed position". Would this be crazy? Or should I let it go and not waste my time?
Thanks for the advice.
