THE UNIVERSITY
Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country, 48 miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of approximately 9,000 students. As of spring 2013, the University had 497 faculty with 47% tenure-track. The University is comprised of six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Extended and International Education, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology. Degrees are offered in 45 majors at the bachelor's level and 16 at the master's level. Sonoma State University occupies 274 acres in the beautiful wine country of Sonoma County, in Northern California. DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Teaching responsibilities include three (4 unit) undergraduate courses each semester. The candidate will build the Psychology Department’s area of cognitive/physiological psychology by offering two foundational and one advanced course in his or her area of expertise. Courses may include a lab component. The successful candidate will maintain an active program of human research/scholarship and involve undergraduates.
In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in academic advising, to assist the department with program assessment, administrative and/or committee work, and to serve on campus-wide committees. Sonoma State is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and places an emphasis on faculty support of undergraduate research. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in Freshman and Sophomore year programs when available in their schools.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have a Ph.D. in Psychology. One year of teaching experience is required as well as an active research program that involves undergraduate students. The candidate will be expected to provide service to the department, university, and community and have the ability to provide academic and career advising, especially to students with interests in the department’s cognitive/physiological area. Desired qualifications include: willingness to develop professional relationships with the community at large, ability to teach students from diverse backgrounds, inclusion of cultural influences in the candidate’s area of expertise in cognitive psychology or behavioral neuroscience/physiological psychology, awareness of the importance and willingness to participate in department and campus-wide faculty committees and governance, potential to sustain an active program of research/scholarship, evidence of ability to involve undergraduate students into research/scholarship, excellent teaching evaluations, and training, experience, and/or ability to teach students from diverse backgrounds.
To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.
