How often are campus interviews spread out?

File this one under desperate, if you please:
Although the typical scenario is for 3 campus interviews to be scheduled within a couple weeks, do people have experiences with committees stretching the interviews out over a couple months? I ask because I was told I would likely be contacted about an interview a while back (but have not yet been), but then Wiki tells me campus interviews are already happening. And at what point do I bug the SC? (I tend to follow wiki advice to refrain from pushy inquiries!)

If the campus interviews are happening and you have not received an invitation, you are unlikely to be selected for campus visit. Search commitee typically invites all candidates within a couple days.

You're not invited, but you could get invited if the invited candidates don't work out, drop out, turn down the job, etc (and the school gives them money to do so). I turned down a job a few years ago and learned that they went back to the phone interview list for a second round of campus interviews.

Yeah, to me that sounds like what they meant is that they will be making interview invites soon and if they decide to interview you, you will hear soon. You did not hear, meaning you are not, at this point, getting a campus invite. But as asstprof mentioned, many times there is a second round, for which you may still be in the running.

I'm on a search committee where we had to go back to the pool after our initial round of campus interviews—so even though our first round happened months ago, we will be bringing in a candidate after the holidays. This is just to say that long gaps are not only possible, but happen fairly regularly (I've been on 5 searches, and this has happened for various reasons on 3 of them).
