How long after an interview is it okay to ask for an update? I was the last interview and was told that they would move quickly. It has been a week and I have heard nothing (so I am assuming the offer went elsewhere). When is it reasonable for me to send an email and ask?

I would wait a little longer, as finals/holidays are delaying some schools' discussions. I heard back ~10 days later at one school just recently, and I know they had to organize some meetings during this busy time to discuss the candidates. I would give it at least til Mon or Tues.
If it helps, I am in the same boat. I had two interviews recently and both indicated they would be done with interviews by now-ish (I don't know specifically when, which is killing me) and were planning to make an offer by the holidays. However, I know things do not always go as scheduled and due to end of semester stuff like wait mentioned above, I am trying to stay positive.
honestly, I wouldn't ask for an update unless you have a reason (another offer), in which case you ought to ask immediately. But if you don't have anything else, then just wait. You might not be the first choice, or they might be slow. If you're second choice, you'll still hear back soon because schools are giving candidates less than two weeks to decide these days.
Okay, but is there a downside to asking? I am assuming that search chairs will not mind the fact that you are still interested in the position… I would just like to know one way or another to alleviate the anxiety of not knowing. I certainly won't ask if there is a possibility that it would be perceived negatively to ask.
