I'm about to interview prospective graduate students for the first time. What are some questions that professors out there ask prospective graduate students that they find to be particularly helpful to know? I know interviews can be kind of a crapshoot.

I am going through a similar thing…I have clinical students instead of experimental. What should I know about them?
For those who care about data: There isn't much data about what predicts best graduate student matching (which is frankly a condemnation of our field — I mean, seriously, I thought we were in the business of predicting human behavior). But studies of hiring in general all suggest that you should *NEVER* use interviews to determine who to hire. It *ALWAYS* leads to worse outcomes. So if you absolutely must do interviews, make your decision ahead of time and use interviews for recruiting.
ananon - do you know some references suggesting interviews can lead to worse (or no better) outcomes? I'm very curious…
