What strategies would you use to network/ market yourself for a faculty job within a particular geographic area of interest?
As a bit of background, my spouse (not an academic) has a job offer in a large city with a competitive academic job market. I haven't had luck with TT job applications in the area. However, I may be able to transfer my current award (F32) to a research lab in an AMC there for the remaining duration of the grant as a 'foot in the door' approach. That would buy me a year to submit a CDA, apply for other TT jobs that come up next fall, develop collaborations with other research groups, etc. But is this too risky, given that no funding is in place after the year is up (i.e., completely soft money environment)? I need to stay in some sort of research position for at least the next several years for LRP/ NRSA service payback. Are there any other steps to take to make yourself competitive for research scientist/ faculty jobs, given that you want to stay in a given geographic area longterm?
