I'm in the middle of negotiating for a job that I will likely take with a great University.
I was feeling ok about the process until I talked with a future colleague who was ALSO hired this year for a job in the same department doing nearly the same type of research.
His "off the bat" startup offer was 10k more than mine, and his peripheral offerings (lab space, renovations) also seem significantly better. Even though he doesn't need some of the equipment I do.
I'm having a lot of mixed feelings about this. I suspect this is fairly common but only comes to light when people compare offers. I'm also female, which is kind of making me wonder if this is one of those under the radar "gender differences in science" things. I hope it isn't, and that there are other explanations.
Any thoughts or suggestions on whether or not this is something I should even factor into my own negotiations?
