I accepted my new TT position a few months ago and to our great fortune my spouse also found a job in our new location. However, in spite of having these two offer letters in hand, we're having difficulty getting pre-approved for a mortgage. Banks are saying that they need pay stubs, even though either of our salaries would qualify on their own for the mortgage (so would our current salaries, for what it's worth, but we currently have jobs in a different state from the new positions so no one expects us to stay in these jobs). Given that the jobs won't start until August/September and we were planning on trying to move much earlier in the summer (as soon as we can find a house), we don't really know what to do.
There are a few possibilities out there (ask the seller to rent us the house for a couple of months, do a short-term non-mortgage loan and refinance, etc) but the whole situation seemed odd to me. Is this a problem anyone else has been having with relocating? Is this something that everyone who relocates has a problem with (not even just professors)?
