Maybe they just had someone take a job elsewhere and they don't want a gap? It shouldn't hurt their pool much, because they're only looking for people who are applying from the comfort of another (probably already tenured) position. Usually such folks aren't in the position of applying to a bunch of places at once but will apply to particularly interesting postings, just 0-3 per year, so it's not as though American will be "losing" this candidate to another place (they'll primarily be competing with the candidate's current institution).
The most likely explanation is that they have particular candidate(s) in mind whom they have been courting this year through invited talks, etc. They're probably required to run an actual search but they've probably already gotten the ball rolling this way.
