Or must that always be done with the institution's Dean/Provost?
In my current position I took (what I think is) the normal negotiating route - negotiating with the department for things like lab space, and with the institution's Provost for salary and startup. (Though I had to send the startup budget to the Dept. Chair to forward to the Provost.) I am currently negotiating for a new position at a different institution and wondering if it is ok/advisable to speak with the Dept. Chair about whether a summer stipend might be possible, or if I should avoid any questions about that and only contact the institution's Dean with this type of issue.
Thanks very much for any input!
