I'm applying selectively right now. I am close to tenure and I don't think I'll have a problem getting it. I love my current job, but the support (i.e., poor sponsored programs office, no support/incentive for grants, etc.) will never allow me to do the research I am really passionate about. In fact, I've had to change my research program to adapt to the university. Could I survive? Sure. The salary is good enough and quality of life is really good. However, I'm going to see if things are really better somewhere else.
For those on search committees, how do you look at advanced applicants?
My pub rate is good for an R2, but not equivalent to what someone would have at an R1 (or on an eternal postdoc). I've been successful securing foundation grants and internal funding, but not federal funding. I fear the lack of federal funding will have me dead in the water for R1 places and maybe even for SLAC.
