My letter writers are reliable and I trust that they are sending them as requested, but is it appropriate to contact search committees to confirm if letters of reference have been received? I am observing that most searches do not send out confirmation of this, but I have received notice when they are NOT received. Should I follow up with each search or wait for the request if letters are missing?

I've waited. With the online systems you can usually log in and see if they sent it.
Ask your letter writers have sent them, the administrators are dealing with dozens to hundreds of applications, and if there is a missing letter the search committee with contact you.
I created a Google Sheet that has all of the schools that I'm applying and the method of submitting the letter. I also created a column for each letter writer so that they could list the date when they sent the letter. I just shared the Google Sheet with all of them and it's been a very smooth process it allows me to know that the letters have been sent.
You all probably know this already … but Interfolio is great with letter writers. You send out their letters - brilliant. Saves you worry, and saves them bother.
But with interfolio letter writers can't customize their letter to the school. Probably not a huge deal for all jobs in the same area, but if you are like me and applying to some jobs in different areas then that is a problem. Or if the ad asks for something that you are perfect for, then it doesn't give them the chance to say that. If you have someone who is a total flake that you absolutely can't trust though, then of course interfolio is good.
