I've noticed that some jobs are updated with rejection notifications before any updates about phone/campus interview requests. Is this a common way of doing things (send some rejections, then whittle down the list for interviews), or is it more likely that interview invites have gone out and the wiki just hasn't been updated?

Either one is possible. As a current search committee member, we are asked by HR to go through and determine who we are no longer considering. Those people will get rejection emails pretty quickly, even if it takes us awhile to do phone interviews and campus interview invites. However, other places won't send out any rejections until the entire process is finished and someone is hired.
Yes places differ as moose says.
I have noticed that interview requests get posted very fast here.
A quick rejection may mean that they see you as un-hirable - i.e., do not fit in some way with what they want. That sucks - but that is part of this cruel game.
