I'm hoping someone can make sense of this for me. An application has some supplemental questions and I don't know how to interpret (let alone answer) this one:
"What is your approximate annual expenditures from external research funding for the past few years in dollars (direct costs only)? Include the proportion of grants, contracts and subcontracts which you control directly."
Obviously if you already have a grant in which you are PI you just put that dollar amount and 100%, but what do you do if you've had, say, fellowships or intramural small grants, or you have been partially involved in grants (as a co-investigator or something), but not all of that money went to your research and you can't necessarily determine what percent when to your work and what didn't?
I'm tempted to put NA or something because I have never been a PI on an NIH or NSF grant but that might not look great. I also don't want to make a big deal out of small pockets I've gotten because that might seem naive or petty?
Will the committee even look at this or is this some HR mumbo-jumbo?
