If you make it to the "long short list" where the search chair calls 7-8 people and asks a standard set of questions, with the goal of eventually inviting some for campus invites, will you ever hear from the committee if you *do not* get an invite? Or only if you do?

I have had a Skype interview where I didn't hear anything from the department afterward ever again. I have no idea whether that is typical though.
Usually you do not hear if you're not invited, unless maybe they know they DON'T want you. Because sometimes the first group of campus people aren't preferred, and then they come back to you. I never heard from phone interview places that I wasn't selected for campus unless I asked directly because I was on a deadline with another place.
Also if you come to campus and you're 2nd choice you're not going to hear anything once they offer it to the first person; they'll wait a bit to see if that person says "yes" or "no," so that when they do offer it to you, you can think you were 1st choice. The only way you find out sooner is if you a) are a definite "no" or b) you make it very clear you need to know by X date because of other opportunities/deadlines you have.
