The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) in the College of Human Sciences at Auburn University invites applications for a nine month, tenure-track position in the area of health disparities to begin August 16, 2016. Candidates with research programs taking a developmental, family, or community perspective on health and health disparities are encouraged to apply. Research programs that examine contextual influences on health, or within-person changes with respect to health as a function of social/demographic, familial, or environmental factors (separately or in combination) are of particular interest. Rank for this position is open, and while we expect it to fill at the associate professor level, exceptionally well-qualified assistant professor level applications are also encouraged. The successful candidate is expected to maintain or build a productive, externally funded research program in the area of health disparities and will have a distribution of research, instruction, and service responsibilities consistent with these expectations. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to participate actively in the Auburn University multidisciplinary Cluster Hires Initiative in the Health Disparities Cluster. New faculty with expertise in Human Development & Family Studies, Nutrition, Psychology, Nursing, and Pharmacy will complement the University’s considerable existing expertise in these areas to form the core of this innovative multidisciplinary initiative. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department includes 25 faculty members (17 full-time, tenure-track), 300 undergraduates, and 45 graduate students and offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees. It also administers the Center for Health Ecology Research, the Center for Children, Youth, and Families; the Marriage and Family Therapy Center; the Auburn University Early Learning Center; and the Harris Early Learning Center of Birmingham, AL.
THE UNIVERSITY: Auburn University is a land-grant institution with a multicultural student enrollment of over 26,000. The University provides instruction in approximately 70 academic departments and maintains graduate research and public service programs. The University is located in the city of Auburn in east-central Alabama near several large metropolitan areas of Alabama and Georgia.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in human development and family studies, early childhood development, sociology, demography, population health sciences, or allied discipline. Applicants should have an ongoing health disparities research program, strong quantitative/ statistical skills, and technical familiarity with large datasets. A research background that includes expertise in epidemiology, population health sciences, or demography would also bring added value to the position. The candidate must be fluent in English, and must possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. The candidate selected for this position must also be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
