I have received an offer for an a senior clinical position, and can choose one of the following:
1. Start at a reasonable salary as associate professor and get a 12% raise when I am promoted to full professor. I would be eligible for (although not guaranteed) this promotion after three years of service. The promotion to full, I am told by some in the department and in other departments, could require substantial committee work.
2. Start with a base of 6K more and an appointment at the full professor level coming in the door, but lose out on the 12% raise later. In the first three years, I would make more with this option and could avoid some stress associated with trying to earn the promotion, but after the first three years, this option would involve a base of about 10K less, relative to the first option after three years.
I'm on the fence. Any advice?
