Full description of position:
The Research Unit „Relativity in Social Cognition“ at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Cologne offers a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f)
with a weekly working time of 39.83 hours (100% position) starting September 1st, 2016. The salary is based on the German TVL-13 scale if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled. The initial contract is limited for 2 years.
The postdoc will be part of the Social Cognition Center Cologne (SoCCCo), which provides a dynamic research environment for the psychological study of human social behavior. SoCCCo brings together six research groups at the University of Cologne that study a broad array of topics in social cognition, ranging from the dynamics of self-control to the ubiquity of social comparison and the intricacies of processing valenced information. For more information see http://soccco.uni-koeln.de. The University of Cologne offers excellent research facilities.
The postdoctoral position is offered within the newly formed research unit on “Relativity in Social Cognition: Antecedents and Consequences of Comparative Thinking” funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG). This interdisciplinary research unit brings together researchers from the fields of social cognition, behavioral economics and animal behavior to examine the role of comparison mechanisms in information processing and behavior. Specifically, we will explore the antecedents and consequences of social comparison. Individual projects will examine how social comparisons are influenced by and influence fundamental intrapersonal and interpersonal processes such as evaluation, self-control, morality, social hierarchy and cooperation. The postdoc will be involved in research that bridges some of these specific research interests.
The position is open to candidates who have recently earned their Ph.D. or doctoral degree or who are expecting their degree in 2016 in any area of social psychology.
Applicants should be fluent in English (spoken and written) as this is the working language at the Social Cognition Center. The ability to speak German is helpful but not necessary.
The University of Cologne is an equal opportunities employer. Applications of women are thus especially encouraged; applications of disabled persons will be given preferential treatment to those of other candidates with equal qualifications.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation, a cover letter describing their research interests as well as their motivation to apply for this specific position. Inquiries about the position can be sent to Alexa Weiss at ed.nleok-inu|ssiew.axela#ed.nleok-inu|ssiew.axela. Applications in electronic form shall also be sent to Alexa Weiss.
The deadline for applications is January 5, 2016.
