Description of Work The Department of Child Youth and Family Studies at the University of NebraskaLincoln,
in partnership with the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of
Nebraska, is seeking qualified candidates with expertise in infant and child mental
health (birth – age 8) for a tenureleading
position at the rank of Assistant or Associate
Professor. We are particularly interested in applications from candidates who can
contribute expertise in the areas of the mental health and socioemotional
development of infants and toddlers from birth through 3 years of age and in how
families, other care providers, and early childhood educators can create environments
that support psychological and socioemotional
development in young children.
CEHS has a history of dedication to enhancing the lives of individuals, families,
schools and communities. In order to address big problems through multiple
disciplines CEHS is making a commitment to significantly build on our work by hiring
22 faculty with interests in the areas of Early Childhood; Immigrant, Migrant and
Multicultural Populations; Bullying Prevention; Math and Science Education; and
Rural Education/Rural Communities across multiple departments, for a full listing of
positions see http://go.unl.edu/yourfuture
Develop a high impact, nationally recognized research program in infant/child mental
health, teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the department, engage in
outreach that has impact within Nebraska, and collaborate with others within the
department, college and the Buffett Early Childhood Institute, as well as engage in
other activities to share expertise and expand the impact of their work. Bring research
program to scale through external funding. Because child development, learning, and
school readiness occur in the context of families, schools, and communities, the
scholarship, teaching, and outreach of the faculty member must reflect a family
systems and contextual (e.g., informed by ecological systems theory) approach.
Demonstrate expertise in the current issues of importance in early childhood mental
health such as toxic stress, trauma, socialemotional
development and selfregulation,
culturally competent and familycentered
practices, and early childhood mental health
consultation systems. Engage in translational research and apply research findings to
practice in a way that makes an impact on care and education environments as well
as on clinical treatment settings (prevention and intervention) in Nebraska. Contribute
to increases in the number and quality of early childhood mental health practitioners
in Nebraska and beyond. Serve on university, college, and department committees
and fulfill other responsibilities contributing to the functioning of the unit. Exceptionally
qualified faculty may also be awarded with an Endowed Chair in Child Mental Health.
The incumbent will devote 25% effort working with the Buffett Early Childhood
Institute, primarily in outreach and translational research.
