I had heard that Jan-Feb is the time when R2s and LACs post their ads but I have not been seeing many new ads lately. Any ideas?
Honestly, the vast majority of ads for TT jobs that start in the fall have already been posted, with fall deadlines. Most of what will appear in coming months are VAP positions. Duke just announced a TT assistant prof neuroscience position that will start in the fall of 2017. That said, there are some schools like "yes"'s above that still have some TT positions for this cycle coming out.
Duke has done that before also, right? Interesting strategy - I wish other schools would follow suit, as it would make the last year of grad school less stressful knowing that you aren't going to be jobless and destitute in a few short months if you have a job lined up!
There's still hope with this academic job cycle. The key dates now will be around February 15th and then March 1st. After that, it'll be something of a trickle into early summer. Some of the job ads will be reposts from institutions that had a fall search fail (maybe going after top candidates who assumed stronger positions). A handful of positions might crop up from faculty moving from their present position to something better. Keep looking, keep applying. During my first job cycle I had no interviews until around March 1st and didn't get any offers until late spring. But, I did get multiple offers including some tenure track options. Good luck!
