Just curious if anyone else put materials in for the Wesleyan cognitive job that had the 6/24 deadline. There's no update on the wiki and I haven't heard anything via email. Wondering if it was an inside hire that required a full search process…
I've not heard anything about this, but outside of the R1 and top SLAC world it's not unusual for faculty to get hired as late as March or April. One possibility is it's a legitimate search following one of their faculty members moving to a new position and having not disclosed until sometime mid/late this past spring.
Wesleyan definitely qualifies as the "top SLAC world," so I also found the job announcement to be surprising. I do know someone who applied because they happened to notice the ad early enough on. Knowing Wesleyan, they will probably still attract a strong pool, even though it will be smaller than usual. They might have even invited some people to apply as a way to advertise this unusual job timing. I was invited to apply for a position there in a different year.
Though I think it's possible that they have an insider who is qualified and would take the job if offered to him/her, I expect they will still do a regular competitive search (regular other than the timing) with other applicants having just as good of a shot as the insider. I really don't think the fix is in for anyone in particular.
I noticed on Monday that their current Visiting Assistant Prof who was teaching the courses listed in the ad has been switched to a title suggesting a multi-year teaching contract. When the ad was posted, I wondered if she had taken a job elsewhere and they needed someone to cover those courses in the fall. Now I'm back to thinking it was a way for them to bump up her status. Alas, it would have been a great position… but the market is tight and I respect departments hanging on to good people they already have in hand.
