Many of the job deadlines are not until October, but I have my materials ready to go. Does the early bird really get the worm in this situation? Is it better to send the materials early or closer to the posted deadline? My vita is not likely to change in the next month, so I am not sure what waiting does for me other than making me more anxious about the looming deadline. Your thoughts?

Having served on job committees I don't think it makes a difference. Usually committees don't start reviewing the applications until after or around the deadline. So really we have no idea when they came in, unless it came in late.
We won't look at our (oct deadline) apps until around the deadline. Some places even may be bound by university requirements to not look at them, if the ad contained a specific deadline.
