For those of you who have received acknowledgements for your applications - did you have to follow up to get confirmation that your application was received? I've sent in several (email) applications and haven't gotten any confirmations - which just makes me worried that they didn't go through.

I've been sending emails to places that haven't acknowledged my application and the due date is nearing. Be patient, sometimes it just takes a while for them to get back to you.
Don't hold your breath waiting for acknowledgements. On three occasions in the last two years, top departments didn't even bother to notify me that I wasn't going to get an offer after a campus interview. Given that, you can imagine how high a priority your application acknowledgement will be. There are a lot of oblivious people running searches.
I've gotten acknowledgements from 12 of the 17 sites to which I applied. Three remaining sites were online applications which provided me with a submission confirmation number, and one site acknowledged the application at the beginning of a phone interview. In other words, I have obtained some type of confirmation from 16 of the 17 sites without having to ask for confirmation— although that acknowledgement often took several weeks after I had submitted the application and often arrived via US Mail rather than email. Be patient!
