Tenured or Tenure-Track Position in Health Disparities. The Department of Psychological, Health, & Learning Sciences (PHLS) at the University of Houston (UH) seeks scholars for a tenured or tenure track faculty appointment at the academic rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Priority areas of study for this position are in health disparities associated with chronic disease (i.e., addictions, autism, cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, mental health, obesity, etc.), prevention, intervention, and/or basic science. This is an exciting time at UH given the university’s health initiative, the construction of a new Health and Biomedical Sciences Building, and our close proximity to the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. The department is rapidly expanding to make a collective impact on addressing health and educational disparities in our local, state, national, and international communities. To this end, we value excellence, community engagement, diversity, student success, and academic integrity. The department is seeking outstanding candidates with the potential for exceptional research, excellence in teaching, and a clear commitment to enhancing the diversity of the faculty, graduate, and
undergraduate student population. Applications will be reviewed by all of our interdisciplinary program areas: (1) Counseling Psychology; (2) Health; (3) Human Development & Family Studies; (4) Measurement, Quantitative Methods, & Learning Sciences; and (5) School Psychology. Placement into a specific program area will be dependent on the applicant’s background and training.
Qualifications: Applicants for this position must hold a doctoral degree in behavioral genetics, community health, endocrinology, neuroscience, psychology, public health, or a closely related discipline. The successful candidate must demonstrate a record of innovative research published in peer-reviewed journals, a sustained record of significant external funding, evidence of effective teaching ability, commitment to student success, and service to the profession. The candidate’s qualificationsmust be commensurate with appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities include conducting innovative research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals; securing external funding to support an interdisciplinary program of research; rigorous teaching in graduate and undergraduate courses; mentoring students; chairing and serving on doctoral committees; community engagement; presenting research at professional meetings; and service to the Department, College, University, and profession.
Appointment: This is a nine month appointment. Review of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2017.
