Negotiations at Associate/Full Level

Question: If you are being recruited from one R1 university to another R1 university (as Assoc/Full), what types of things did you ask for during the negotiation process? I realize that some things will be the same as a junior hire (research money, course releases, salary, equipment costs, etc.). However, I am more curious as to whether there is something "bigger" that you asked for because you were at more advanced level.

positions/funding for current grad students/postdocs/lab staff who want to move with you so that you can continue your outstanding research program that attracted their interest

Well, if you are like me, then you have run out of everything, all former start-up funds and resources are depleted, etc…. So, in addition to something "bigger," don't forget to ask for all the "starting over" stuff you may need - just to get going again….

Similarly - we often ask ourselves what we would change if we could "do it all over again…." So, were there things you did not get the first time around, that you want to make sure you include this time around?

As another post noted, I have often seen current students/staff move as members of a research team, so that could be a definite possibility.

It's difficult at this level - there's less jobs, and seems like more competition from highly qualified people. Good luck with the process!

With a more senior hire, I have heard of negotiating for grad students, etc. I am also curious to hear others' thoughts. I haven't negotiated terms of a job offer in over 10 years. I am also wondering if it is acceptable to ask to defer the position for a year, when negotiating at the mid-career level?
