I recently sent an email to a search committee chair because I could not determine whether I should apply for the job or not. The ad at times seemed focused on one particular area of research (not mine), and at other times seemed to emphasize a broader departmental and collaborative focus (where I would fit well). Now I am re-thinking whether I should have done so. Thoughts?

I think that is definitely a good move, and I would suggest contacting search chairs when you have questions about the job. Nobody wants to read an application from someone who isn't a good fit - so its good if they can give you that feedback before you apply. At the same time, if the search is broader than a specific area than they really do want the best candidate and that might be you.
I did this for several postings and, with the exception of one place, got really good feedback. SO I think it's a good thing!
FYI, I heard back and she encouraged me to apply. Her response was short but definitely cordial so I think I did the right thing by contacting her.
