OK, so I completely acknowledge that this is a totally neurotic question, but I am wondering if there is any order to which departments have candidates attend campus interviews. I have heard that departments often make a ranking of the candidates on their short-short list before they come to interview and am curious if this has anything to do with the order that candidates attend campus interviews (for example, do departments invite their favorite candidate first or last more often or is the order more typically random.)

One of my invites was just based on availability.
The second was based on when he got ahold of people on the phone.
I think it is all dependent on the candidate's availability.
In my experience they have offered the candidates a series of 4 dates and then it is first come first served in terms of who gets which one. I highly doubt most places would simply assign you a date without any flexibility.
Now, in terms of which one you pick (i.e., first slot, last slot, etc). That is another whole set of worries! :)
LOL….don't get me started on how worried I was about the recency effect!
