What is the typical number of course releases (or buyouts) provided to new hires?

It varies. In my current r1 job, it's 4. At a teaching college it will be 0, though the very tippy top liberal arts colleges may have a pre-tenure sabbatical. The least I've heard of at an R1 was 1.
I had an offer from an R1 last year where the normal teaching load was 1/2 where I'd teach one course the first year, two courses the second, then go to the normal 3 courses per year from that point on.
At an R2 school I was told the first year would be a 1/2 instead of the normal 2/2 and possibility only 2 preps.
At a top liberal arts I was told a one course reduction plus the pre-tenure sabbatical.
Thanks for the info. Any advice on how to negotiate more course releases?
I think just asking in the negotiations is key. And saying "I'd like a reduction to a 1/1 this year in order to get my lab running" or a reduction to a 1/2 with only two total preps.
When negotiating, ask for the moon and the stars….try not to leave anything on the table!
