Just curious how common it is for references to ask you to draft a letter yourself. I absolutely HATE doing this, isn't it obvious to the SC? And a related question - one person who did write a letter for me emailed me a scanned copy so that I could send it out to various schools myself. Does it look bad to send a letter where the signature and letterhead is printed out, rather than original? I'm sure I could get him to sign and send originals but wondering if it's actually important or not…

Writing your own letter is odd, but I'll let others comment more on that (I was never in that position). As for the photocopied letters, I know that all mine were handled by a dept secretary who just sent out photocopied/scanned letters. As far as I can tell, this is pretty normal and certainly won't detract from strong letters (be sure you wrote yourself a good one).
It isn't that odd at all, although it can be an uncomfortable experience.
