I was not really certain about a thread title for this question but here is some background information:
I interviewed for a job about 9 months ago. I did not hear anything back for 4 weeks. When I did hear back, I found out that they delayed the starting date for the job until January 2011. There were a lot of reasons why the ball did not get rolling as fast as it should have - there was spring break and some other things that came up. After talking to the chair, he asked me to call him back in August/September. I called him back and left him an email (at his request). I did not hear anything. I also noticed the job was still open in December so I emailed him again.
I received a call last week from the chair.
While I called back and left a message, I'm nervous about this position. I think if it had been filled - like I thought - he would not have called me back. In fact, he joked on the voicemail about it being awhile. I'm very interested in the position but I was wondering if I'm reading too much into this. My thought is perhaps they had someone lined up and it fell through or there is something wrong in the department.
I wanted to "read" some of your thoughts about this. I know the market is tough and would hate to turn down a position because I had a "funny feeling".
