Is it just me or is it strange that there are so many positions that have long since closed and which have released no news regarding their hire? Could a lot of budgets be falling through this year?

budget issues are possible, but unfortunately, I'm afraid its simply lack of updates to this wiki. I personally would not count on any postings that still haven't moved forward with initial contacts.
and people who don't use the wiki are interviewing and getting offers
It does seem like things are later this year, but I could be wrong about that. I think I've gotten maybe one or two rejections, plus one update.
What I think Anon meant was that many of the SC have not sent letters to their candidates updating them on the status if the search. This has been true for me too… Only about half of the positions I applied to and who have hired someone have sent me a letter or email.
Sadly this is not remotely unusual, there seems to be something about an academic job search that makes one's manners go out the window. Hopefully departments are a bit more courteous when dealing with actual employees, but judging by how many TT people seem to be on the job market, I have my doubts.
Heck I'm still waiting to hear from one search chair that promised a week or so ago to contact me last friday, or over the weekend at the latest. I'm still interested in their opportunity, but if you can't keep something as straight forward as an update in mind, just how are you going to be when it comes tenure time? I think I will give them until this weekend before accepting the visiting offer I'm sitting on and calling this cycle a bust. (we'll see if I can hold off emailing as I don't wish to be a pain, but I've already taken an extension on the job offer to pursue this opportunity and it would be nice to know if I should go ahead and accept it already or continue to drag my feet while this plays out.)
On the other hand some schools are still processing applications, I had to turn down a different phone interview as they would not be remotely ready to decide by the time my extension expired. So keep the faith people.
I think people are also most sensitive about posting the offer updates because it would be pretty clear for the university to figure out who leaked it. I know of one friend who has an offer and did not update past "campus visit." I am not sure I should either, lest they think it is her and get annoyed or something.
