Hi All,

I realize this can get into some sensitive areas, and of course there can be huge differences between, for example, R1's and SLAC's, and equipment needed for research in different fields, but any input would be much appreciated! Would anyone be willing to offer the following information?

1) Year offer made/negotiated (e.g. 2009)
2) Type of institution (e.g. SLAC/R1)
3) Type of position (e.g. cognitive, assistant prof. directly out of grad school)
3) Salary first offered (e.g. xxx dollars for 9/12 mo. salary)
4) Salary asked for
5) Salary settled on
6) Start-up first offered (e.g. xxx dollars, includes money for ERP equipment)
7) Start-up asked for
8) Start-up settled on
9) Other perks/benefits negotiated for (e.g. parking, course reduction, summer salary, etc.)

Assistant Prof in Cog-neuro with one research line applying neuroimaging techniques.
When I negotiated, the school made it very clear that they had very little wiggle room with respect to what they could offer me. They put a ballpark figure on the table for startup and an exact figure for salary. Personally, I felt that the offers were right where they should be, were consistent with my expectations as well as their recent hires across several different departments. In the end, things came in a few extra $K above what they originally offered, including a small amount of summer salary (for years two and three) .

• Importantly, the startup provides me with the resources I need to get my research program up and running. I'm curious to know what others think about this but I believe that any university that is unwilling to meet this primary criterion is doing themselves and you a disservice.

Agree with none, that I won't share all those specifics, but here are some generalities:

Salary was intially offered in low 70's and we agreed on mid 70's, which is slightly higher than recent hires and very competitive in terms of nataional averages.

They largely agreed to my start up requests, which were more than adequate to get my research off the ground. Package included summer salary, RA stipend, relocation expenses and course reductions. Total package was north of 100K.

BTW of course I understand not wanting to share all the specifics, but any input at all, e.g. the candid emails below, is very helpful! Any SLAC'ers out there willing to share?
