Hello, everyone. Maybe you were fortunate enough to land a wonderful job this year, possibly even early on in the process. If so, congratulations! This thread is not for you. (Plus, why are you still on this site anyways?)

The rest of us are all probably doing a fairly decent job keeping ourselves together, whether we have a job for next year or not - we're still applying, writing, teaching, waiting, and hoping. It might be tough to stay optimistic, but for the most part, we do it.

Every once in a while, we might want to take a quick moment and give in to those distractions. By "give in," I mean "absolutely flip the #%@ out." I'll go first!

DO MY APPLICATION MATERIALS GIVE OFF B.O. OR SOMETHING

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD YOU NEED A PH.D. TO BE A LAB MANAGER THESE DAYS
AND THE ONLY NEW JOB POSTS ARE FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA
NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT

I DON'T HAVE A JOB AND MY WIFE IS PREGNANT AND WE'RE GOING TO END UP LIVING IN A REFRIGERATOR BOX DOWN BY THE RIVER

but hey at least i got some sweet results from my last set of analyses

Oo, oo! This is exactly what I wanted this morning.
Caveat: I'm not the one job hunting; my husband is, but I come on here at least a couple times a day in the vain hope that there is some news about the job he interviewed for.
Caveat 2: My husband HAS a job already, and it's not a bad one. So I recognize we are lucky, since I am pregnant (hi previous poster!) and we know we won't be living in a box down by the river.

BUT

AAAAAAAAAAAAAGHH!!!

I totally hate where we live! It's 2000+ miles from my home! I want my parents to be able to see their grandchild more than once a year! I can't work here… they're slashing the already-slashed budget because this stupid state is run by anti-intellectuals. The pay I get for the occasional sessional class is downright INSULTING, about a third of what I made doing the same work in Canada. I'm told I probably won't even get a single sessional for the next academic year. I live in Republican Central and I'm a liberal! The public schools here SUCK! There is one podunk university and one community college. The next nearest larger university? FOUR HOURS AWAY.

Where my husband interviewed is 3 hours from my parents' house, liberal little town, 19 colleges in the area (three with good departments in my field)… I can drive an hour and be in my native land!! My friend works at the college down the highway and can help me get sessionals there!

It's been 3 weeks and a bit since the school my husband interviewed at had their last candidate. We know it's over. But there's that tiny… teeny… hope… that maybe this candidate is leveraging offers, and will go with another offer, and then my husband might be #2 on the list!!! But I don't have the emotional strength to hold on to hope that slim… not with the existing internal madness of being 7 months pregnant.

and now back to my regularly scheduled programming of reminding myself to be grateful for what we have, and getting my class notes ready for tomorrow.

Hi,
It sounds like a very tough situation. But….you are going to have a beautiful baby!! A lot of us are waiting too long for that being so busy with having a career in academia that this important part of having a NORMAL life gets completely sidelined…until it might be too late, at least without major investment. I guess counting your blessings is what helps to gets through this…good luck to you and everybody else who is struggling right now!

This is bizarre—after months of waiting to hear stuff and two campus interviews (one rejection), but mostly silence…I got an interview invite for a school in Europe last week, and today, two calls today for phone interviews that may lead to campus interviews, and a rejection from my campus interview from the other school where I had a campus. So weird to have so much going on within a random week in March! Hope things are picking up for other people, too!
