As my search is winding down and I'm beginning to make decisions (one formal offer and am still on the short-list for a T-T), I have been looking at private and public research positions outside of academia (public policy, testing, etc). Has anyone here made the jump that might be willing to share some insight into what life outside academia is like? What are the things you like about your job and what are the things you miss about academia? If you're like me and contemplating making the jump, what's pushing you in that direction? For any more senior people here, have any of your advisees left?
It's a huge decision since in my field (cognitive) it's virtually impossible to make the transition back into academia. In addition, I'd be going into it blind because all I've ever known is the academic life, so any insight or information from those that have more experience would be really helpful.
