Hi…i have recently defended my dissertation and wonder if i need to let my future boss (e.g., department chair) knows about this? and if i do, how can i write an email to him without sounding odd?

Oh, absolutely yes. I'd say that a short message would be plenty, simply saying that your defense went well, and you're officially finished with your Ph.D. (as soon as you hand in your final copies, of course). Not only that, but as soon as you get anything official from your graduate university, make a copy and give that to your new HR department. (Most of the time, you can get a letter from the registrar.) Everyone at your new job will absolutely want to know that you're done. Congratulations!
