I thought it might be good to start a thread for advice on cover letter decisions. I'll start:
I am currently entering my 4th year in a TT faculty position (assistant prof) and plan to apply for some different jobs this Fall (i.e., lateral moves mostly but perhaps for better pay/better location). Is it smart to ask the places I'm applying NOT to mention or contact my current employer? On a related note, is it smart to say something in the letter than I AM actually looking to move, not looking to increase my salary at my current job? If yes to either, any advice on phrasing?
I also wonder if it will look like I'm running from a bad 3rd year review (I'm not)… should I say that I'm not or wait for this to come up on its own later (e.g., phone interview)?
