I have been on the market for about three years. I've had about four interviews in that time, but no offers. Before I started a post-doc, I had a child. At the end of that post-doc, I had a second child. I taught as an adjunct for a semester, but have not taught in about 6 months. I have continued working on research since the post-doc ended through collaborative relationships I have built over the years, producing presentations and publications. My family needs to stay in the area where we currently reside, which significantly limits the number of positions for which I can apply.
How might I convey this teaching break, while stressing the need to stay in the area, in a favorable way in my cover letters? I'm at my wit's end with applying with no offers, and starting to consider not applying for an academic position in the future.
