Did you communicate this during the visit? Or in follow up thank you emails? As a rule, always convey this during the visit. Regardless of whether or not it is your top choice.
If you have a specific reason to email them then you could do it, otherwise I would not. It probably won't make a difference. If you do have a reason (like you are getting postdoc offers or other interviews) you could do it.
Like, "I hope you are having a wonderful semester. I wanted to let you know that I am currently interviewing for several positions and I was wondering if I could inquire about the current status of the XXX job search? Then Two sentences explaining why you are excited about the position and why it is your top choice. Then thanking them for their time.
