What is the protocol on contacting search committees? Does anyone email chairs and ask about status or send an updated vita and re-express interest in the job?

I've done both of these things. For a status update, I only emailed about a job for which I knew I had been short-listed (and found out an offer had been extended to someone already). When I had a publication accepted I emailed an updated vita to a bunch of search committees; some even replied with congratulatory remarks… though none followed up with interview invites!
Only email the search committee if you a) have another job/postdoc offer or b) have a major change to your vita (i.e. publication or grant accepted). They already know you are still interested in the job or you would have withdrawn your application.
