I'll be interviewing at a school that has informed me that the teaching load is a 4/4. Ideally, I would like a teaching load of 2/2 (my dream situation), but I would be pretty happy with a 3/3 or even reluctantly a 3/4. How common is it that one is able to negotiate this? Are there certain questions I could ask to see if this would be a possibility without coming right out and telling them that this is my preference? In some cases this has been obvious (i.e., I had one phone interview in which the faculty were explicit about how under staffed they were), but are there other signs that faculty are understaffed and overworked? Is it pretty weird to ask about overloads and that sort of thing?
