I need advice from others. I am currently doing a postdoc that does not fit well with my research interests at all. I think because of a lack of clear communication both sides were disappointed about this (me and the host team). I struggle to do the work they are interested in (mostly cognitive) and they don't know much and thus can't mentor me on projects I am interested in. In addition, I am not learning new skills, I am learning a completely different area of psychology which will not benefit me. They do want to renew the contract for next year and so I am unsure about what to do at this point. I don't have anything else lined up (jobs, postdocs, etc), although I have applied to several I haven't heard from.
I feel that if I renew my contract I will be wasting my time in terms of things I really want to do and publications that will help me in my area (Social Psych). It's a great position in some ways such as not having teaching expectations but the lack of fit is really starting to get to me after being here for several months. Assuming the worst, I don't get another postdoc or job offer in time before I have to make a decision about this offer, how crazy is it to just not renew the contract and work with someone whose research interests do match with me, even if it is unpaid? Do people do this, is this what a visiting fellow is? How does one go about contacting people asking for something like this? How bad does it look on CV if the experience was unpaid as far as search committees are concerned?
Thankfully I don't have a financial constraint because of my partner but I really want to make sure I work with someone whose research interests align with mine so I am more marketable next year. I need some advice, I feel lost at this point.
