I'm not sure if anyone can give me any advice on this but I'm going to put it out there. I just landed a wonderful TT job at a school with a mix of teaching and research but after many years of school and training to get here - I am ready to start my family as well. My potential time to have a baby may be limited and I have been advised by my doctor that it is basically now or never. So, I am looking at trying to get pregnant in the Fall, which I realize is not the best thing for my career. Do I talk about this with anyone? Should I go to HR? My first thought was to go to other women in the department but none of them have children. I am not looking for any special treatment but do not want to make them upset after only being there a few month and have no idea what the maternity policy is as the handbook for the university is very vague.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation or known of anyone in your department that has successfully done this? Any advice in going forward?
