I'm going on the job market again (after being in my TT position for 3 years) in order to coordinate with my partner's academic job search. What are some best practices for when to tell the chair/department and how to navigate this in the cover letter or on the job interview.
My department knows I've been in a long-distance relationship and have even said they are worried about losing me. I can try to approach the chair/dean and see if they could find a position for my partner (but we're a public school in a state with drastically cut budget, so there's been a hiring freeze for the last 3 years, so it doesn't look promising).
My biggest concerns are:
1) I'm told I need a letter to "vouch" that I'm a good colleague/dept citizen — should that letter be from the chair or does a colleague work?
2) When do i break it to my chair?
3) If it's later in the game, what is the best way to discuss this in my cover letter (e.g., do I ask for confidentiality to not contact my chair/dept until i'm offered a position?)
