Hi, I am hoping to get some advice from people in the field.
I accepted in the spring for a TT position at a university out west and am set to move there next week, but a recent change in the department has me worried. When I interviewed out there I got along really well with most of the faculty and the director. We have research interests that align and he felt like someone I could work with.
I recently found out that he's no longer the director and the new director approaches the field from a very different academic perspective from me and different from some of the newer faculty. (psychodynamic v. cognitive) It's a research/teaching position and I am concerned that the new direction of the program will hamper my ability to push my career forward research-wise and I am worried about discord in the department. I don't, obviously, have anything else lined up for this year but wonder whether a year away and applying again for a new position this fall would be better than going into the unknown? My wife works from home, so I am not geographically limited, but I do realize that it is competitive out there. I guess I was somewhat competitive this year and had 3 on campus interviews and a phone interview from R2 schools.
I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have.
