I'm wondering if starting salaries for assistant professors differ by type of institution. I'm an assistant prof at a regional college now and I'd like to move up to a more research oriented school or a SLAC but I can only afford to if I can maintain or increase my salary. I make $60,000 now. Do some assistant professor positions start with higher salaries? I would not be hired with tenure—that is I would be starting the tenure track over again. Also does it matter where the position is located? I live in a cheap area of the country now, but the jobs I'm applying for are in more expensive areas.
I'm trying to figure out how I can pay for my kids to go to college in a few years when I'm still paying off my own student loans, so this is an important factor for me.
