I actually have to totally disagree with that…. Asking questions about policies doesn't imply to me at all that you think you are getting the job, but these are things that may influence whether you want the job or not. For example, if one school offers a longer maternity leave than another, or one has a much better health insurance options. To me, these are normal questions to ask when applying for a job and are not really things you would be able to negotiate in a start up. Obviously though, you want to be cognizant of the way you ask and don't want to come across like you think the job is yours and take the lead from the person interviewing you in what the interview is supposed to entail, but I think its totally appropriate to ask about about things like health insurance, retirement, maternity leave, etc.
