I have an interview soon and was wondering whose advice can I really trust when it comes to departmental issues? I guess I feel like everyone is going to try to put the department in the best light but I want to know who to best trust given conflicting information. Thoughts?

I agree. I've had junior faculty (especially brand-new hires) be very honest with me, as well.
Definitely know that the graduate students might think they know the scuttle butt but they might be wrong. I have heard grad students totally report inaccurately on faculty relationships/issues. The other thing to keep in mind is that things you say to graduate students will be reported to faculty as a rule. Treating them well should be a top priority. (We once had a potential senior hire actually refer to the graduate students, in front of them, as "hired help." he did not get that offer!)
This is true, grad students might have in inaccurate perspective, but I think that says something about the program if grad students view faculty relationships in a certain (even if inaccurate) perspective. If they say faculty don't get a long for example, there must be something going on to lead them to that conclusion, unless they're blanantly lying. But if course everything should be taken with a grain if salt…
Great advice. Thanks all. As a graduate student, one of my biggest irks is when candidates talk to me like an informant. I want them to take an interest in my work and give me some advice not use me for information. This is a difficult balance to strike. How do you all ask for further information while also avoid coming off as a slimy candidate?
